Spelling:
  • Spell-A-Roo - beginner and intermediate levels, find the word that is spelled incorrectly in each sentence.
  • What Can I Do on Computer? - access a variety of spelling activities by clicking on the "ABC & Spelling" link.
  • Word Confusion - Choose the correct homonym - two levels of difficulty.
  • Homonyms - several homonym practice quizzes with online grading and feedback

Grammar :

  • Grammar Practice Park - for grades 3 - 5. Select from a variety of activities. Scroll to the bottom left of each game's page and click on the "grammar glossary" links to learn about the skill before playing each game.
  • Go for Grammar Gold - for grades 1 - 5. A variety of grammar activities for including phrases and clauses, tenses, adjectives and adverbs, irregular verbs, commas and colons, and prepositions. Also, this site will read all of the instructional information to the student.
  • English-Zone.com: Grammar Zone - grammar rules; printable and interactive activities for grammar practice.
  • Flash Quizzes for English Study - quizzes on vocabulary and grammar listed according to difficulty level.
  • Idioms - lots of practice on idioms and phrasal verbs.

Poetry:

  • Riddle Interactive - a tutorial which is read to the student outlining the characteristics of riddle poems and guiding the process of writing a riddle poem. Covers the ideas of simile, metaphor, opposites, and parallel structure. Provides a printable guide for creating a poem off-line.
  • Shape Poems - provides 7 shapes and a word bank created as a prewriting prompt which stays visible as students create their poem.
  • Acrostic Poems - students brainstorm words and phrases on a subject, then are guided through completing an acrostic template with their word/phrase list visible as a guide.
  • Diamante Poems - provides an editable format with cues for creating a diamante poem. Tutorial on parts of speech are included. Results can be printed.
  • Line Break Explorer - students move text around on screen to explore how the physical apperance of the words on a page enhance poetry.
  • Letter Poem Creator - tutorial (no audio) on the thought process involved in creating poems based upon a letter; giving examples of how to break narrative into stanzas.

Punctuation:

  • Punctuation Paint Ball - play an arcade-style game for punctuation practice; 3 different levels.

  • Power Proofreading - read and correct reading passages; choose from 7 levels: 2nd through 8th grade.

Organization:

  • Education Place - choose from a large assortment of graphic organizers (files are in PDF format, pages can be printed out).
  • Scholastic new link-printable graphic organizers, along with related "teaching tips". Note: Requires Adobe Acrobat reader, forms can be typed into on the computer and be printed out, but can not be saved.
  • Literary Elements Mapping - map out the elements of character, setting, conflict, and resolution as a prewriting activity or analyze a passage by another author. Level: secondary
  • What Can I Do on Computer? - access a variety of activities by clicking on the "writing" link.
  • Writing Fix - Filled with story starters and ideas for creative writing using Six Traits. Also includes organizers that can be filled out and printed from the site. (all levels)
  • Interactive Six Trait Writing Process- student reads passages and critiques them based on the trait being addressed in the lesson. Free site but requires registration. Once registered, progress can be tracked for up to 40 students per account. (High School level)
  • Stapleless Book- provides a template for creating an 8 page book from a single printed sheet. Space is provided for typing text and titles, and blank space can be left for hand drawn illustrations after printing.
  • Animal Inquiry- this site provides 4 different prompted organizers- guiding students through the process of writing a paper about an animal. Prompts include facts, babies, habitats, etc.
  • Read, Write, Think Notetaker- easy to use online outlining tool. This is an easy to use organizer for up to 5 levels of information, which can be reorganize without retyping online. Prints for use as a prewriting activity or study guide.
  • ReadWriteThink Printing Press- provides easy to use templates for creating all sorts of print-brochures, newspapers, flyers, and booklets. Prints with space for hand-drawn illustrations if desired.
  • Circle Plot Diagram- a prewriting graphic organizer which can be completed online and printed. Up to 4 events with their descriptions can be entered and printed.
  • Comic Creator- providess a kid-friendly interface for creating a 6 panel cartoon as a pre-writing activity, or to demonstrate sequencing skills. Templates are provided for backgrounds, characters, and speech bubbles can be added and text typed into them
  • Compare and Contrast Guide- an on-line tutorial in this method of organizing a paper.
  • Flip Book- students can type and illustrate a tabbed flip book of up to 10 pages. Uses include taking notes while reading, collecting facts for a report, or organizing ideas as a prewriting activity.
  • Multigenre Mapper - provides an online organizational strategy for prewriting with space for title, main idea, detail, and an illustration- prints for use as a rough draft.
  • Persuasion Map- an interactive graphic organizer providing a way to organize main thesis, three reasons to support, 3 facts to prove each reason. Can move non-linearly through this guide. Prints for use as rough draft or brainstorming before final written product.
  • ReadWriteThink Webbing Tool- an online freeform graphic organizer allowing students to organize and rearrange (without retyping) related ideas.
  • Venn diagram 2 circle OR 3 circle- circles can be sized independently. Each notation in the diagram has room for additional comments, which will print below the diagram. On the 3 circle version, students are guided through starting by making a list of each circle, then are prompted, item by item, to correctly place it in the diagram.

Other:

  • Bartleby - a wonderful online source for reference materials. Search from a wide range of resources like the dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia or look up quotations and speeches.
  • Elementary Test Prep - online lessons and practice activities for using table of contents, index, etc.
  • Manatee County Benchmarks - online practice for establishing purpose in writing. Click on the red dots to read each section and answer questions. Submit each quiz at the end to see your results.
  • Doodle Splash(for younger students) and Literary Graffiti(for older students) an online "sketch pad" combined with a text box for brainstorming and prewriting activities.
  • Fact Fragment Frenzy- a tutorial which reads aloud directions, then provides students online practice for finding facts in nonfiction text. Great for practicing notetaking skills.
  • Letter Generator- this online guided lesson teaches students the parts of both a business and personal letter, then allows them to type and print their own using guided prompts.
  • Puzzle Maker - students, teachers, and parents can use this great source for creating customized puzzles. It can be used for a variety of subjects: spelling, science, history, math, etc… Use the drop down menu to select the puzzle you’d like to create, choose from criss-cross puzzle, number blocks, math square, double puzzle, cryptograms, letter tiles, fallen phrase, or computer generated mazes.
