Brimhall Junior High Dress Standards

The Mesa Unified School District recognizes that student dress and grooming practices are generally a matter of personal choice. The District also recognizes that there is a relationship between students' choice of dress and grooming practices and such things as school pride, self-esteem, general welfare of the students and the accomplishment of curriculum goals and educational objectives. Students are expected to dress in a manner that promotes these goals and objectives. This includes all school events/activities before and after school.

Brimhall Junior High School maintains a positive image. Students are expected to keep themselves well-groomed and neatly dressed. Inappropriate clothing items include the following.
  • For safety reasons, closed-toe shoes are recommended at Brimhall Junior High. Sandals, including flip-flops are discouraged, but allowed. Sandals are not allowed in lab classes or in physical education. P.E. classes require athletic shoes that can be securely laced. Students enrolled in Industrial Tech, FACS, Science and Art classes should check with their teachers about appropriate footwear during laboratory time
  • Pajamas, slippers or house shoes
  • "Spike" jewelry, chains, or other potentially dangerous accessories
  • Hairstyles that are contrary to good hygiene or disruptive to the school environment
  • Headwear (hat, scarf, bandanna, hairnet, etc.)
  • Hats cannot be worn inside the building
  • Ragged, torn or dirty clothing: Any clothing ragged, torn or ripped at all above the knee, or dirty is considered inappropriate.
  • Clothing that advertises alcohol, tobacco, drugs
  • Clothing that contains writing, or graphics, that is obscene, questionable or negative
  • Underwear or lingerie must not show (boxers are considered underwear)
  • Clothing that does not cover the shoulders (shirts must have sleeves)
  • Clothing that does not cover the midriff (shirt must cover the midriff all the way to the pants, even when students raise their arms)
  • Open-toe shoes cannot be worn during labs in science, FACS or industrial technology
  • Jackets and sweaters may not take the place of an appropriate top or cover over an inappropriate top
  • Overalls or pants must cover underwear/lingerie
  • Shorts need to be long enough so there is no inappropriate exposure of the body when a student bends over
  • Trenchcoat style coats
Students not conforming to these rules will be required to change into clothes provided by the school, turn inappropriate clothing inside out, or have other clothing brought to school. Additional consequences will be issued if students continue to dress inappropriately. School personnel reserve the right to confiscate inappropriate clothing and other items and to return them only to parents or guardians. Class time lost because of inappropriate dress must be made up.
Special Note: Dress standards remain the same for dances. Formal attire is not required at any of the dances.
