Elementary Reading

Reading instruction in Mesa Public Schools is defined by the Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards for English Language Arts. Students develop competency of the standard by mastering the five components of reading which include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, as identified by the National Reading Panel. Mastery of these five components enable children to read and comprehend all genres of text in real world situations.

Developing a Thriving Reader from the Early Years & Building Blocks to Becoming a Reader

Read On Arizona created these resources for all adults who work with young children in Arizona. These resources recognize that a reader’s journey starts from birth and there are strong components and critical milestones that guide the development of a healthy reader. The hope is that these resources will guide early care and education practices to ensure that children receive every opportunity to make progress and set a child up for success in school, career, and life.
