Accelerated Reader is a supplementary program used
at Bush Elementary and all over the country to provide guided independent
reading practice and improve reading skills.
WHAT DOES A.R. DO?
... helps teachers to guide students to read independently
at a level just right for them. This reading range or "ZPD"
(Zone of Proximal Development) is determined by taking a computerized
STAR diagnostic test and also by monitoring quiz scores. Research
shows that reading skills improve faster when students read at a
level that is not too easy and not too difficult. It should be just
challenging enough to lead to growth.
...supports all curriculum areas by strengthening
students' independent reading abilities.
...provides concrete measurement of a student's reading
comprehension abilities and growth over time.
...provides daily time for independent reading.
...provides immediate feedback. After reading a book,
students take a short multiple-choice quiz on a computer.
...motivates students to read.
...does not replace the core reading program. It is
a supplementary program only.
...quizzes test for comprehension, not memory. Students
should only take quizzes on books that they have recently read.
