The Chernobyl Explosion
  • The Chernobyl explosion was an explosion that submitted large amounts of radioactivity into the atmosphere.

Where did it happen?
  • The Chernobyl explosion happened at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (Reactor #4) near Kiev, USSR.(which is now the Ukraine) .

When did it happen?
  • The Chernobyl explosion happened on April 26th, in 1986.

Why did it happen?
  • Scientists at Chernobyl conducted a highly risky experiment that caused the explosion.

What were the damages?
  • 31 people died immediately after the explosion. 135,000 people were evacuated after radio active material spread through Europe.  As a result, thousands of people died of cancer deaths and birth defects were expected.

Could this disaster have been avoided?
  • Yes, this disaster could have been avoided. If the scientists at Chernobyl used the proper precautions, then this disaster would never have happened.
