- The Great Chicago Fire happened in Chicago, Illinois. The fire started
on the southwest side of the city.
3
- The fire started on Sunday, October 8 1871 at 9:00 p.m. It’s
said that part of the problem that the fire started is because it was a
warm & dry day and that there were very strong winds.

- Legend says the fire started when Mrs. Patrick O'Leary's cow kicked over
a lantern. Since that is just a legend we don’t know if it is quite
accurate.

- The fire started out in the southwest side of the city and burned down 3
and ½ sq. mi. of the city. The fire burned for more than 24 hours.
6
- 17,450 buildings were destroyed, 300 people were left dead, 90,000
people were left homeless, and $200 million of property was lost.

- I think this fire could have been prevented by not having a lantern
where a cow is without a person. Also with today’s technology the fire
could have been stopped more quickly then it did.

8
- Since the disaster the city has been rebuilt and people are a little
more cautious when they leave any fire hazards by a cow.
