Hurricane Andrew
  •  Hurricane Andrew was a devastating disaster in 1992. It hit Florida on August 24th, 1992. It brought tremendous winds and rain! It killed an average of 80 people. Now it is known as the second most costly hurricane in U.S. history.

Where did it happen?
  • Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, Louisiana, and the Bahamas.

When did it happen?
  •  Hurricane Andrew hit on August 24th, 1992 and lasted through August 26th, 1992.

How/Why did it happen?
  • Hurricanes happen when heavier air touches warm air, it presses and pushes. some of the warm air moves sideways and some of it moves up. In conclusion hurricanes form when there are large pressure and temperature differences between warm and cold air.

What were the damages?
  • Some damage was that it killed an average of 58 people.  It left 250,000 people homeless and caused about $20 billion in property damage. In the Bahamas it left a path of destruction 25 miles wide and 60 miles long! People had also left their pets to fend for themselves. Officials found and caught a python and a cougar that escaped from the zoo.

Could this disaster have been avoided?
  • Yes this hurricane could have been avoided if the residents of Florida and Louisiana had more warning and time to get away.

What has happened since the disaster?
  • The towns that were affected have started to be rebuilt. The buildings walls have been reinforced with stronger materials. Since that hurricane there have been four other hurricanes, so construction hasn’t been finished.
