- INTRODUCTION
- Christa McAuliffe, a young
elementary school teacher, was the first civilian to go up into space on
the Challenger. After the disaster, they discontinued sending civilians
into space.

|
- The disaster happened in the U.S. above the state of Florida.
|
|
4
|
- It happened at 11:39 AM on January 28, 1986.

|
- It disintegrated 73 seconds into flight because of a rubber O-ring
failure. The unusually cold weather during the launch caused the O-rings
to allow hot gases to leak out of the booster through the joint. The
flaming gases burned a hole in the shuttle’s external fuel tank.

- It probably could have been avoided because if they didn’t do it on a
cold day, there wouldn’t have been an O-ring failure.
- If they found out after the shuttle exploded that the cold weather
caused the O-ring failure, they might have not been able to avoid it.

|
- They did rebuild the Space Shuttle and it took off in September of 1988.
