- This fire made Mrs. O'Leary's cow famous. Why you ask? Well come with me back in history to
find out!

- The fire started in the windy city of Chicago which was built on a
swamp.
- More specifically in an alley behind 137 Dekoven St.

- The fire began at 9 pm on Sunday October 8, 1871. The terrible fire ended three days
later.

- Some have thought that Mrs. O'Leary's cow started the fire by kicking
over a lantern in her barn, but others disagree.
- Others say that it did start in her barn but not by the cow. Some say
they saw broken pieces of glass on the outskirts of the barn while they
were snooping.
- A man named Michael Athern confessed that he started the whole “cow
story”.

- 100,000 left homeless
- 300 died
- Chicago lost $200 million in property
- Some things survived such as the water tower, St. Michaels Church, St.
Ignatius School, Old St. Patrick's Church, and Mrs. O'Leary's house with
only minor damage.

- In my opinion I think that the disaster could have been avoided. All they had to do was get other
states to help them put out the fire.

- They have rebuilt much since the disaster.
- It cost thousands of dollars to rebuild everything.

- Jessica attends Barbara Bush
Elementary School. She is in Mrs. Schomaker’s 6th grade
class. There she is on the honor roll and she is also the director on
the morning announcements, B.B.S.
At home she enjoys drawing, eating, swimming, hanging out with
friends, and playing with her dog, Buddy. Next year she will go to Shepherd
Junior High. She is looking forward to the tough new work and being in a
brand new school.
