Need an Appointment?
Appointments are made with the counseling secretary who will assist students in selecting an appropriate counselor. A response counselor of the day (COD) is available every day for students or parents who need immediate assistance. Students must have their school ID to make appointments. |
The Role of the School Counselor
The Red Mountain High School Counselors provide developmental and preventative guidance counseling instruction and are anxious to work with staff, students, and parents. The counselor's work with students begins with preregistration activities in the ninth grade or in the case of new students, as they enter the district. Their contact with students continues throughout high school through a variety of contacts, lessons, and presentations. The Counseling program is built upon a model called Comprehensive Competency Based Guidance (CCBG). This model has been adopted by the American School Counselor Association, The Arizona School Counselor Association, and Mesa Public Schools.
Counselors assist individual students who have unique needs, especially those who may be experiencing barriers to academic success. In addition to working with students on an individual basis, the counselors deliver guidance curriculum to ALL students through large and small group instructional presentations. These presentations are related to four program areas or domains: self and opportunity awareness, social responsibility and awareness, goal setting and decision making and preparations for transitions.
The Counseling Domains
Educational Domain-Academic Support
Information and guidance is provided to students to encourage academic success and help establish life-long goals. This is addressed through individual counseling, group counseling, program development, conferences, staffings, inservice, and workshops.
Educational Domain-Post Graduate
Post-graduate information network is coordinated to assist students, parents and staff in educational planning, decision making and goal setting in preparation for college and other post-secondary education. The counselors work closely with campus contacts and advanced education resources to become familiar with available programs for students, parents, and staff.
Personal/Social Domain
Prevention and intervention services are provided through personal, whole group and school wide delivery systems to meet the personal/social concerns of the Red Mountain community. The counselors work closely with community resources to provide support for students, families, and staff
Career Domain
The counselors and Career Specialist coordinate and plan activities that align with grade level competencies to provide career information, generate and interpret student interest and ability information, and liaison between the student, training programs, and the world of work.
