Math Notebook ’06-‘07
3-Ring Binder
Directions for Organization
The math notebook that you
will keep this year may be kept in a separate binder (preferably a 1” binder)
or as part of the Study Skills Notebook.
ALL math papers
must be kept within this
notebook for the quarter. After grades
have been received, you may then throw out any homework/classwork that you feel
is unnecessary. The math binder/section
should be set-up as follows:
Cover Page: The introduction to this part of your notebook will
be a cover page that is designed by you. It should be an acrostic of your name. You may use any media to design it. It may be done on the computer, free-hand, or
as a collage. The cover page identifies
the owner of the notebook.
Assignment Calendar: Each student is given an Assignment Calendar to
record their weekly agenda for math.
This agenda is given every Monday.
It is the student’s responsibility to log this information onto their
calendar. The weekly calendar outlines
the objectives that are covered and the days that assignments, quizzes, or
tests are given. A new assignment
calendar will be given each quarter.
Assignment Sheet: This is separate from the Assignment Calendar and
logs all assignments that are given during the quarter. Assignments are numbered, dated, and given
points for completion or accuracy. The
student is to record the points that he/she earns on this sheet when their work
is returned to them. A new assignment
sheet is also given every quarter.
Notes: Notes will be
given for math objectives that are covered.
The notes will be written on a transparency and projected onto the
screen. The student is to copy this
information into a spiral notebook or onto loose-leaf paper and kept in the
math binder. Notes SHOULD BE kept all year
and used as a reference. If a student is
absent when notes are given, it is the student’s responsibility to get the
notes that they have missed.

Tab Dividers(5): These dividers are used to organize the math
binder/section. The tabs are to be
labeled as follows:
Tab 1: Homework
Tab 2: Graded Assignments
Tab 3: References
Tab 4: Quizzes
Tab 5: Tests
Tab 1: Homework
Each homework assignment that is given should include a
proper heading
(name, date, period, assignment number), an attempt at completing
ALL
problems, ALL work shown,
work completed in pencil, and written neatly.
It is essential that a student
attempt every assignment that is given even though
it may be difficult. Homework
constitutes a major portion of the
quarterly grade.
Tab 2: Graded Assignments
ALL graded assignments are to be kept in the math
binder/section until the
end of each quarter.
DO NOT throw away ANY papers until after you
have received your quarterly report
card. It is suggested that all
assignments be
kept in date order.
Tab 3: References
References are given out all year and may be used at any
time except
when taking a quiz/test.
Your notes may also be kept in this section.
Tab 4: Quizzes
Quizzes are given after an objective is covered in
class. There are no
pop quizzes and a student will be aware of the date they
will be given.
Quizzes are filed in this section according to date order. There are NO
RETAKES on quizzes.

Tab 5: Tests
Tests are, normally, given after each chapter. A test grade is usually an indication of the mastery/understanding
of the chapter’s objectives. A grade lower than a 70% may indicate a need
for remediation/extra help.
Students who earn a grade LOWER THAN a 70% on a test will
be given the
the opportunity to re-take the test. This should be done as soon as possible.
A student is asked to take
their math binder/section home during the year to share with their
parents/guardian. A student is given a
Progress Report itemizing the papers/information that should be included. The quality of the work contained in this
binder normally correlates with the grade that the student is earning in math
class. Parents/guardians are asked to
review the binder with their child. This
is an opportunity for a pat on the back or a time to discuss interventions to
assist the student in achieving a greater understanding of math.
Please share this piece of
information with your parents/guardian.
This paper should be signed by both the student and parent indicating
they are aware of the importance of organization and the expectations of the
student with regard to their work/performance.

The student is asked to show
this page of the Binder letter to Mrs Mikan by Friday, Aug. 18, 2006. The student will then keep the packet in
their binder as a reminder of their responsibility in this class.
