Routines and Class Procedures

Mrs. Mikan’s Math Class

Stapley Jr. High School

2006-2007

Absenteeism – Please turn in any homework that you may have had prior to being absent.  Check your weekly calendar to see if you missed any assignments while you were absent.  If there were any worksheets that you may have missed, you will find your copy in the absentee folder on the wall.  Complete assignments and turn them in within the allotted time period (day/days absent plus one).  Write the word ABSENT at the top of the paper.  Place it in the appropriate class basket.

Bathroom Privileges/Bookstore/Water Fountain – These things should be taken care of before class begins.  Otherwise, the use of a hall pass will be needed.  These should be used wisely!  Teacher discretion may be used when such requests are made.

Beverages – No drinks or beverages are allowed in the hallways or in the classrooms.  You will be asked to throw them away upon entering.  You may bring a water bottle with you on days that are extremely hot.

Checking papers – You are to use a green,  orange, purple or  red pen/marker when checking papers.  Another student checks your classwork/homework.  The student correcting the paper is to put their name at the bottom.  ONLY place a check mark next to those items that are not correct/right.  DO NOT  put stars next to items that are correct.

End of Class – I will dismiss you from class, not the bell.  Wait to be excused.  Clean up any mess around your desk that you have made.

Extra Credit – Every student will be given the same opportunity for extra credit.  Extra credit is not given on an individual basis.

Finishing early – IF you finish your math assignment before class is over, you may work on any other homework or read a book.  Don’t waste your time!

Fire Drill – When there is a fire drill, please proceed quietly out of the room and WALK - don’t run – down the hall towards the science wing.  Walk out the doors at the northeast end of the building.  Proceed through the courtyard and out to the basketball court.  When you reach the court please look for me and form a line directly in front of me.  I will take attendance.  When the all clear signal is given we will proceed back into the building.

Gum – Chewing gum is NOT acceptable in my room.  Though many students disobey this rule and receive no consequences, I am very strict about enforcing this rule.  A 30-minute detention will be issued after your first warning.  During this detention you will be required to scrap gum off any floor, desk, wall, etc. in the building, or write for the 30 minute period.

Heading – Every math paper must include a proper heading.  The heading should be written beginning on the top line of the upper right-hand corner of the paper.  It must include the following: first and last name, date, class period, assignment number/classwork.

Homework – All homework must be completed on loose leaf paper, written in pencil with a proper heading, and ALL WORK shown.  Homework should be placed in the class hour basket prior to class beginning.  Should you forget to do your homework and/or turn it in, you will earn zero points.

Kleenex – Kleenex is located on my file cabinet.  Please use them only as needed.  Availability is based on the donations that you bring in.

Need help – Please raise your hand if you need extra assistance with your math work.  I will come around and assist as requested.  I will also be available to help you with your math work after school.

Passing in papers – Pass all papers to the right, first.  Then pass them to the center.  One of the two people in the center will be selected to place the homework in the appropriate class basket.

Questions – There are no stupid questions – only those that are not asked!  No put-downs are tolerated in my class.  To be successful, in math, you MUST ask questions.

Supplies – All students are requested to have a binder, loose leaf paper, pencils, protractor, pen/marker correcting papers, spiral notebook, and a set of 5 tab dividers.  I DO NOT loan or supply students with the necessary materials that are needed in order to be prepared for class.  The students are to be responsible for coming prepared.

Tardies – In order to have an excused tardy, you must present a pass from a teacher or the office.  Any other tardy is unexcused.  3 unexcused tardies earn you a 30-minute detention before or after school.  5 unexcused tardies are written up and given to the main office.

Teacher Materials – Colored pencils, crayons, scissors, stapler, and tape belong to me.  You may borrow them as needed.  Please return them to their proper place when you are finished using them.

Textbook – You will be assigned a specific math book, for use at home, for the entire year.  You are responsible for this book.  Should you lose it or misplace it, you will need to pay a fine to cover the cost of purchasing a new one. There is a classroom set of books that will be available for the students’ use while they are in my class.

Trash – There are 3 wastepaper baskets in this room and 1 recyclable (blue) basket.  Please use them accordingly.  There are no maids to clean up after you.  Please keep my room neat and tidy.

Visitors – When a visitor interrupts class please continue working or wait quietly for instructions.  This is NOT free time.
