Functional Program Description

The philisophy is to provide the students with lifelong knowledge, skills and behaviors
that are needed to be independent and successful in academics, personal management, workplace, and social skills.

We will accomplish these goals by:

1. Using Functional academics in Reading, Math, and Written Language.

2. Encouraging students to attend general education elective classes as needed.

3. Participate in Community-based Instruction.

4. Foster appropriate social skills.

5. Begin developing vocational/transitional goals.

    Functional Math

    Incorporate calculating skills into functional math, such as menu math, money math, time, banking, etc.
    Use the money skills learned while in the community and real life situation.
    Learn word problem solving.


    Functional Reading

    Incorporate decoding skills through reading sight words, functional words and grade level stories.
    Improve reading comprehension and listening comprehension.
    Emphasize functional reading through sight words and while out in the community.

    Functional Writing

    The functional writing program includes:

    Spelling
    Writing sentences and paragrapsh using correct grammer.
    Personal Data/Forms
    Friendly Letters
    Basic Keyboarding

    Personal Management

    Prepares students to function with maximum independence within their present and future enviornments. The ultimate goal of instruction is to provide students with skills that increase independence in daily life. Personal Management skills may include:

    Self -Awareness/ Self-Advocacy
    Domestic Skills/Personal Care, including health and safety
    Vocational Skills
    Awareness of learning styles
    Preparation for post-school goals

    Community-Based Instruction

    CBI provides opportunities for students to teach students to perform skills necessary to function within a variety of natural, community environments. Some of the skills emphasized include:

    Money
    Social Skills
    Functional Reading and Math
    Communication
