Introduction to French and French II
Stapley Junior High
2007-2008
Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome to an exciting (and continuing) adventure in a new language and culture. These classes are designed to make language acquisition a natural, personalized, enjoyable, and rewarding experience. We will work to attain proficiency in four skills – speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
General classroom policies and procedures will be thoroughly discussed in class. Each student will complete an assignment calendar on Mondays, which will outline the work for the full week and which is always available on my web page to alert you to homework, quizzes, and tests. This calendar is an important tool for students and parents. Also, each week, grade averages will be posted in the classroom by number. Students will have no possibility of being unaware of their grade averages!
In addition, I am now able to post updated grade reports online every week through my web page on Stapley’s website, http://www.mpsaz.org/c3staple/mmevans/index.html. From my home page, click on the following: view grades, Mary Evans, select a class, choose Intro or French II, enter the student’s last name, enter the assigned six-digit number, and click view report. The six-digit number is the hour, 05 for French II and 06 for Intro, plus the student’s assigned four-digit Stapley number.
Any written homework assignment is due at the beginning of the period and must be ready to submit before class begins. Late work cannot be accepted – with one exception. Each student will be allowed one late assignment per quarter. This allowance is designed for that rare occasion when a family or extracurricular commitment honestly prevents the student from getting an assignment done on time. In case of illness or other excused absences, students may have one day for each absence to complete the missing work. STUDENTS ABSENT ONLY ON A TEST DAY MUST TAKE THE TEST UPON RETURN TO CLASS UNLESS I RECEIVE A WRITTEN PARENT REQUEST TO DELAY TESTING. Students need to make separate arrangements to take oral/aural parts of tests either before or after school.
I will expect students to follow all school rules, be polite, and be prepared with necessary materials (a 3-ring binder with a section for French or a separate French folder, sharpened pencils or black pens, and a highlighter).
One misdemeanor per quarter will be overlooked. A second infraction will result in a 15 minute detention with me either before or after school. During that time the student will work on a separate academic assignment or do housekeeping chores. If problems persist, you will be consulted and we’ll bring in the administration as needed.
Next, you will need to understand how quarter grades are determined in my class. I use the following two categories:
(1) Process Grades, 30%: daily assignments in class, brief homework assignments, cooperative activities (graded individually), calendars, brief writing assignments, brief speaking responses, quizzes, etc.
(2) Product Grades, 70%: “etape” or section tests, chapter tests, vocabulary or grammar tests, projects, oral presentations and tests, original dialogs, etc.
The semester/course grade is the average of the two quarter grades. The following grading scale will be used:
89.5 - 100.0 = A
79.5 - 89.4 = B
69.5 - 79.4 = C
59.5 - 69.4 = D
Below 59.5 = F
Students having academic difficulty may be allowed to retake tests on a limited basis. Students needing this privilege should see me to work out a time before or after school for the retake.
Parents, please feel free to contact me at any time at 472-2775. I will make every effort to return your call on the same day. Please keep me informed of any special circumstances, needs, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mary Evans
