| Accelerated Reader is a reading practice program that has been implemented in Mesa Public Schools and in all Reading classes at Carson. All students at Carson must have a book to read during homeroom and are encouraged to read frequently. |
There will be book readings, students will be able to take AR tests, and light refreshments will be provided. |

(do not print - over 400 pages) |
| Children read books in a "reading range" which has been determined, by a diagnostic test, to be in their reading comfort zone. Although these reading ranges are expressed numerically, they do not represent grade levels. This Zone of Proximal Development, or Z.P.D., enables each student to choose books within her or his range for good practice and sincere enjoyment. As a child reads more books, the reading range will increase. |
| When a student finishes a book, a short comprehension quiz can be taken using a computer located in the computer labs or classrooms. A certain number of points are earned based on the score, as well as, the length and difficulty of the material. The Accerelated Reader software generates a report outlining the results of each quiz, the number of points earned, average book level, and the average score of all quizzes taken this school year. |
| Carson Junior High supports this reading program with rewards, incentives and contests throughout the school year as students accomplish various goals. |
| As students improve their reading skills, confidence and success in all classroom areas and subjects increases as well. Your support is encouraged and welcomed. |
