The History of AVID at Carson Junior High School |
The AVID Program was introduced to Carson Junior High in the 2000 - 2001 school year. That summer, several teachers, counselors, and the Principal traveled to San Diego for intense training.
They returned with mounds of information and an overload of excitement about the program. The AVID methodologies were shared schoolwide at an in-service preceding the first day of school. Staff was introduced to Cornell notes, S.L.A.N.T., binder checks, WIC (WIC-R), and tutorials. The buy in from colleagues was enormous. One eighth grade AVID elective class was formed.
Now, six years later, Carson has over thirty trained staff members and five AVID elective classes. Our site team consists of teachers and staff from all grade levels and subjects. AVID methodologies are continually introduced at staff trainings and used throughout the campus.
Carson's AVID students and staff have made the program successful and brought us to the level of petitioning to become a Demonstration Site.
