ASU Graduation

Biography

Hello! My name is Amanda Straus and I am the Mild to Moderate Disabilities teacher at Carson Junior High for both 7th and 8th graders. This is my 4th year at Carson, and I am proud to say that I teach at a campus where I have the flexibility to have my students experience several opportunities to grow and improve their overall academic and social-emotional skills.

I graduated Arizona State University in 2017 with my Bachelor’s degree in Special and Elementary Education. Shortly after my first year, I decided to pursue my Master’s in Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University to ensure there are continuing voices within our Education system advocating for our students. During my 2nd year of teaching, I was awarded one of Mesa Public School’s Rookie of the Year awards for my service with special education students. My class also runs our school’s Student Store club. Student Store provides an opportunity for our students to gain workplace skills at the junior high level while increasing their money management, and social skills. The money earned from Student Store is used for classroom supplies, or field trips. At Carson, I also coach girls’ volleyball alternating each year between 7th and 8th grade.

During remote learning and eventually when we return for in-person learning I teach Math, Science, Personal Management, and an online only Adaptive P.E class. My colleague Alyssa Hernandez, who is our Autism teacher at Carson, will teach the students English, and Social Studies. We will use Canvas during remote learning for some assignments, WebEx for live lessons, as well as Freckle which is an online supplemental learning platform designed for students to complete assignments at their individual level. We will use Freckle when we aren’t doing live lessons on WebEx or Canvas assignments.

Overall, I am SO excited to be one of your child’s teachers this year! Please reach out to me via phone or email, and I will respond to you within 24 hours.
