Mentor Program
The New Teacher Mentor Cadre goal is to impact student success by increasing new teacher effectiveness and is an important component of new teacher induction. Mentors provide on-going individual support to enhance the skills and effectiveness of newly hired educators who are new to the teaching profession. This program was initiated in the fall of 1987, and to date boast more than 500 trained mentors in MPS. Currently there are 162 new teachers being mentored by 126 Career Level mentors (some mentors have more than one mentee.)
The Cadre is comprised of qualified Career Level educators who provide support to Teachers New to Teaching (TNT) and Teachers New to Mesa (TNM with no more than two years of contract teaching experience). A Career Ladder Specialist coordinates and manages program implementation and establishes mentor and new teacher (mentee) teams with the administrator’s approval. Areas of expertise, grade level, assignment, building location, needs of the new teacher, and expertise of the experienced teacher are team assignment considerations. Interaction and communication between the mentor and the new teacher are confidential and teacher evaluation is never a part of the process.
