ELAA Top
ELAA classes (English classes) are for those desiring to learn the English language through practicing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It is open to anyone 16 years old or older. Daytime and evening classes are held at a number of sites throughout Mesa, AZ.

GED classes provide preparation for the high school equivalency test. It is open to anyone 16 years old or older. Classes are held at a number of sites throughout Mesa, AZ.

ABE Top
ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes are offered. This class is geared to students with a reading assessment below the 6th grade level. It is open to students 16 years old or older. Classes are held at a number of sites throughout Mesa, AZ.

NOTE:
Students must be legally present in the United States to attend classes.
Drop-in registrations will NOT be allowed at the classroom.

Course of Study Top
GED Classes:
The instruction provided in GED and PreGED classes is designed to address the learning needs of people with a wide range of skills and abilities. Classes include activities and lessons in the five GED subject areas: writing skills, social studies, science, literature & arts and mathematics. When a student enters the program, standardized assessments in reading, writing and math are administered and the student's lesson path is determined. Individual assignments are made based on the results of these assessments. Students maintain their own education portfolio which includes goals, practice test results, subject-area assignment sheets and a monthly assessment of progress to help the student determine when they are ready to take the GED exam. Students must attend registration prior to enrolling in a GED class.

GED Test:
GED Preparation classes are recommended before students take the GED exam, but not required. The GED exam is given at Mesa Community College for a fee. For GED testing information and requirements, call (480) 461-7482.

ABE Classes:
The instruction provided in the ABE classes are geared to students with reading assessment scores below the sixth grade level. The classes include activities and lessons in the following subject areas: writing, reading, social studies, science and mathematics. In addition, instruction and activities are designed to promote job readiness. The enrollment is kept lower to allow the teacher more opportunity to work one-on-one with students. Students may be referred to this class from another adult education class. Students must attend registration prior to enrolling in an ABE class.

ELAA Classes:
ELAA (English Language Acquisition - Adults) classes provide instruction for people who desire to improve their basic English language proficiency. Classes are participatory and interactive and include listening, speaking, reading and writing activities designed to promote the acquisition of the English language. The classes are divided into three levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. At registration, students are tested and placed in the appropriate level. Students must attend registration prior to enrolling in an ELAA class.

Citizenship Class:
The Citizenship class incorporates English language skills with subject matter designed to help students acquire the knowledge necessary to pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam. Lessons and activities are based on a social studies topic and are participatory and interactive. Students must attend registration prior to enrolling the Citizenship class.

Family Literacy Classes:
The Family Tree Project is a family literacy program where parents and their pre-school child attend school together. Adult education classes in the Family Tree Project offer ten hours of ELAA, GED or ABE instruction each week. In addition, the students attend parenting classes and work one-on-one with their pre-school child. For information about the Family Tree Project, call (480) 472-7277.
