STUDY SESSION

1.  Discussion on New Educational Options for Students
Dr. Cowan led the discussion on new educational options for students. He provided a summary of the Lindsay School District site visit in California, which serves 41,000 high minority, low income families/students. Based on test scores, it is a high achieving District.

Mesa Public Schools is working with the Chandler Unified School District and East Valley School of Technology (EVIT) to design the framework of a new school based on a model whereby 60 sixth-grade and 60 seventh-grade students from surrounding schools will enroll in a competency-based school. The school would serve students who are underperforming on state assessments. It would be a performance-based system and students would move forward based on how they perform instead of moving through the content at a traditional pace.

2.  Discussion on Student Academic Achievement
