Biography

Welcome to Room 23!  This is my second year at Crismon Elementary and my second year teaching in Arizona, however this is my 15th year teaching and all of them have been in fifth grade.  I have a special place in my heart for this grade level.  I believe that children don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.  With that, I thoroughly enjoy getting to know each of my students on an individual level.  I strive to make my classroom a community where students work collaboratively, take ownership over their learning, and aren't afraid to take risks in their learning.

I grew up in the inner city of Los Angeles, CA and am a first-generation college graduate.  I attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR and received a BA in Psychology.  I loved Oregon so much that I decided to stay and complete my MA in Education at Oregon State University.

Upon completion, I returned to the inner city that raised me and began my teaching career in Los Angeles Unified School District.  After two years I decided to head to Atlanta, GA to continue my career.  I taught at the same school in the inner city for 7 years in Atlanta Public Schools.  I then moved outside of the city and worked for 4 years in a very small school district named Marietta City Schools.  While working in Marietta, I attended Kennesaw State University and earned an EdS in Instructional Technology.

When I'm not teaching, I'm probably traveling.  I LOVE hopping on a plane and experiencing a new place.  So far I've visited Italy (Milan, Venice, Rome), France (Paris, Nice), Ireland (Dublin), Scotland (Edinburgh), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Spain (Barcelona), and Mexico (Cancun, Riviera Maya).  I'm not sure I count cruise ports as visiting a country since time is so limited, but if I add those then I've visited: Cozumel, Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. Some of these places I've visited more than once because I just love them.  I'm anxious to visit the remaining continents, including Antarctica!!!  I've almost visited all 50 states, but now I've become interested in visiting more of our national parks.  Aside from traveling, my favorite hobby is snowboarding.  When I'm not moving around, I love to curl up and read a good book!
