MLA Works Cited

Basic Rules

  • Your Works Cited page should be on a separate page at the end of your research paper.
  • It should have the same 1" margins and last name, page number header as the rest of your paper.
  • Label the page, Works Cited, and center it at the top of the page (do not italicize the words Works Cited or put them in quotation marks).
  • Double space all citations, do not skip spaces between entries.
  • Indent the second and subsequent lines of citations by 0.5 inches to create a hanging indent.

How to make a hanging indent

On Microsoft Word:
  • Place your cursor at the beginning of your second line, before any text.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Paragraph from the resulting pop up menu.
  • Under Indentation, use the Special pull-down menu to select hanging.
  • Use the By menu to select 0.5"

On Google Docs:

  • Highlight all of the text
  • On the ruler drag the blue triangle to the 0.5" mark
  • On the ruler drag the blue rectangle to the 0 mark
