Lt Col Brian Yates, USAF (Ret), became the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) for Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) at Dobson HS in 2016. He has been an AFJROTC instructor since 2007 and holds an Advanced Instructor certificate. While a USAF "brat" himself, and having spent his childhood living in numerous states and countries, he is a native of Arizona (born at Luke AFB) and graduated from Mesa High School.
Lt Col Yates has a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Technology from Arizona State University and a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from Boston University.
He entered the Air Force in 1985 and served as a career intelligence officer (focusing primarily on information technology development) at the wing, Major Command, Unified and Combined Command, Joint Task Force, Air Staff and Defense Agency levels. During his 22 years on active duty he went on over 100 temporary duty assignments and deployed three times (two wars and the largest humanitarian airlift in history). He has also completed numerous military leadership schools as well as the AFJROTC Instructor Course and the JROTC Marksmanship Instructor Course. Significant awards and decorations from his military career include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with device, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon with device.
He and his wife, the former Barbara Jackson, have two sons: Anthony and Devon.
