The Educational Services Division provides comprehensive support and services for the day-to-day functioning of the Mesa Unified School District. The division, consisting of the associate superintendent, area assistant superintendents, and assistant superintendents for both Student Services and Curriculum & Instruction, works directly with schools and departments to maximize student learning and the services that enhance that learning.
Dr. Michael Cowan, Associate Superintendent, works closely with other members of the Educational Services administration in the delivery of the educational program and all day-to-day operations in each classroom at every school. Dr. Cowan may be reached at (480) 472-0205 or mbcowan@mpsaz.org. Educational Areas The Area Assistant Superintendents are the direct supervisors of the principals at the schools. The schools are organized into three geographic areas, north, south and west. Each assistant superintendent works with schools within their area to manage the day-to-day operation and learning at each school. Student Services The Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Dr. David Shuff , oversees Guidance & Counseling, Mesa Youth Placement, Prevention Programs, Student Records, Health Services, Special Education, Medicaid Monitoring, Native American Education, Preschool & Itinerant Services, Psychological Records, and SHARP. Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Suzie DePrez , Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, is responsible for overseeing Athletics & Physical Education, Basic Skills, Career & Technical Education, Career Ladder & Professional Development, Creative Arts, Early Childhood & Parent Education, Educational Technology, Educational Television, English Language Acquisition, Extended Learning Program, Music Education, Science, Social Studies & World Languages, and Title I Programs.
