Extended Learning Program - Serving Mesa's Gifted Students

Junior High Extended Learning Program

Program Description

The purpose of the Extended Learning Program (ELP) in the junior high schools is to provide a climate in which gifted students may use their talents for in-depth exploration and discovery. Using the Socratic method, these challenging classes promote higher-level thinking and effective communication skills. (For a definition and more information about the Socratic method, click here.)

ELP classes are offered in English and Social Studies. Students requiring advanced/accelerated Math should consult the course catalog and the student's counselor for math curriculum options.

See the Mesa Public Schools Course Catalog for more information: MPS Course Catalog

Qualification Process

Students qualify for the Extended Learning Program (ELP) by testing into the top 3% of students nationwide in either the Verbal or Non-verbal portions of the qualifying test. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is the primary instrument used for testing.

Students participating in Elementary ELP automatically qualify for Jr. High ELP. For those not already in ELP, testing for Jr. High ELP usually occurs at the beginning of the schoolyear at the Jr. High. Students, whether coming from Elementary ELP or new to ELP, must submit an application in order to participate in Jr. High ELP.

If the student does not qualify and an appeal is made, the psychologist and the counselor at the junior high will review the scoring results to determine if further testing with the WISC III is needed. Students who score l30 on the WISC III will be placed in the junior high Extended Learning Program. If the appeal is denied by the school counselor and psychologist, then the denial may be appealed to the ELP Director.

Students transferring from other school districts with test scores from state-approved nationally ranked tests may use these test scores for qualification to the Extended Learning Program.

In Jr. High, students must maintain a "C" or better grade in ELP English and Social Studies to remain in these classes.

For other exceptions or questions, contact the ELP Director.
