Mesa Schools’ K-6 Science program is recognized as one of
the premier hands-on inquiry-based programs in the country. Science
curriculum in Mesa focuses on developing all students’ content
and science process skill knowledge as well as critical thinking
ability. Grade level curriculum is aligned with state and national
standards and teams of teachers working with content area specialists
do on-going revision of materials. All materials are provided
to each teacher through the Science and Social Science Resource
Center, recognized as one of the top materials centers in the
nation. Each grade level curriculum is taught through units (kits),
usually three or four in number. These kits contain complete science
experiments, activities and cross-curricular support materials
such as tradebooks, math and literacy connections. Weblinks for
technology integration as well as on-call science specialist assistance
are also provided. Additional units are available in order to
accommodate extensions in student learning (i.e. gifted &
talented).
Several science units involve unique and exciting experiences
for children such as a visit from the Desert Animal Presenter
who brings several native animals to fourth grade classrooms.
Fifth graders are thrilled to follow up their unit on flight
with
a trip to one of two Flight
Centers. There they demonstrate knowledge of science concepts
and “fly” an aircraft simulator and helicopter.
Sixth grade classes are offered the opportunity
to participate
in the Space Integration
Module
at their school site. This highly motivational experience uses
the theme of space to capture the imagination of students and
engage them in a wide variety of learning activities aligned
to standards in all content areas.
