The social
studies units for the primary grades are developed to present an
integrated, hands-on experience with a topic. We have units that
begin with the investigation and awareness of self (Everyone
is Special) and progress to a global picture of the community,
state, country and world (Count Down for Earth). Third
graders experience a decision making unit (Stop, Think, Decide)
which focuses on the multiple intelligences, individuality, cooperative
learning and community building. The topic of celebrations and the
reasons cultures celebrate is addressed in our third grade Celebration
units of Hanukkah and Chinese New Year.
While intermediate
students have a textbook-based social studies curriculum, it is
supplemented with student desk maps and a variety of optional enhancements
for bringing social studies to life with more hands-on, interactive
activities. Our fourth graders study Arizona and experience the
Native Americans of Arizona unit. We have simulations available
at all school sites for fifth and sixth graders to extend their
social studies experiences. This includes Pioneers, Who Really
Discovered America, Discovery, Greek, Roman, Egypt, and Renaissance.
Additional opportunities
include participation in the Martin
Luther King and the Constitutional Essay
Contests. Teachers are also provided with materials and training
for implementing the curricula for Kids Voting,
and We the People. Mesa Public Schools
provides a unique Special Presenter program that educates students
regarding Drug Awareness and Positive Choices.
