The AR Program
How do we become better readers? We become better readers the same way we improve at other skills . . We Practice!!
Accelerated Reader is a researched based program that ensures reading success for every child by encouraging students to read independently at a reading level that is appropriate for them. Through AR we provide not only the time for reading, but also the motivation to want to read.
At our school we . . .
Teach reading skills
Provide time for children to select books and to read
Monitor each child's reading success
-
Students take the
STAR test to help us determine their reading level "Zone".
Their Zone is the reading level range that is comfortable for
independent reading as well as challenging enough for maximum
growth.
-
Students check out library books that have been color
coded (for primary students) to help them quickly identify
the reading levels.
-
Teachers provide 30 to 60 minutes of independent reading
time each day.
-
After they finish a book, students take an AR quiz
on the computer. They receive instant feedback on comprehension
and are awarded points based on their score and the level of
the book. Their goal is to maintain an average score of 85%
correct on quizzes.
-
During Accelerated Reading time in the classroom,
teachers monitor each student for success and progress through
daily logs and conversation.
-
After a student takes a quiz, a "TOPS" report
is printed and sent home to parents after a student takes
a test. This provides parents with information about their
child's
progress as well as an opportunity to celebrate their child's
success.
-
Teachers monitor students' quiz scores. Average
scores below 85% alert teachers to provide help or to adjust
the level
or the length of books for that student until the average quiz
score is back to 85% or higher.
