Social
Studies: During the year we cover the following topics: Early Settlers, Explorers, Settling America, American Revolution, Constitution, US and world geography and map skills, and US governnment.
Science: Units include Mystery Powders, May the Forces be With You, Flight and a trip to the Salk Flight Center, What's the Matter? and Space. We also learn about alternate sources of energy a unit that culminates with a solar cookout at the end of the year.
Literature
Studies:
In addition to literature studies, we use selected stories from the literature series,
Trophies, published by Harcourt Inc. This series offers many wonderful
stories and materials to enhance your child's reading experience
including a web site (www.harcourtschool.com). We are also using the Accelerated Reading program. Students should be reading a minimum of 15 minutes per night. Check out the Accelerated Reader page to find out more about this program.
Writing: Step
Up to Writing Skills, six traits. We will also be using
the English series published by Houghton Mifflin. They also
have a web site
(www.eduplace.com)
to supplement the textbook.
Math: Place
value, decimals, multiplication and division, problem solving,
geometry, fractions, applying mathematical concepts. In addition
to the textbook, we are using materials from Opening Eyes, Visual
Math,
Hands-on Equations, Engineering Math, and various websites
to enrich students’ math experiences.
Computers: internet
research, word processing, Powerpoint presentations, cooperative learning, web sites for math,
English, and reading textbooks.
In
the News: The fifth grade uses the Time
for Kids magazine (www.timeforkids.com)
to supplement the teaching of reading, writing, math, science
and social studies concepts.
