Welcome to the first grade!  The children are busy learning all the new skills that will help them to be more successful in school.  We would like to give you an overview of what our first graders are learning now and what learning will take place in the future.

READING

Together we’re exploring our reading series, “Trophies”, published by Harcourt.  It’s a phonics and literature-based program that will get the children off to a great start.  The homework packet is closely aligned with the reading series. It helps the students to strengthen their vocabulary and blending skills.  Please encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes every day.  The children have been enthusiastic about their reading and we are pleased with their progress!

MATH

We began by reviewing readiness skills.  This year, you’ll see our first graders moving a lot of counters around, counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, acting out story problems and learning basic addition\subtraction facts.  We will explore place value, money value and how to tell time.  Addition and subtraction timed facts will be practiced so we can reach our goal of completing 30 problems in 2 minutes.

SCIENCE

First graders are learning to think like scientists!  We will be learning about our world through units.  Our units allow them to explore weather, soil, rocks, water, and animals. They will discover the properties of solids and liquids as they sort and experiment with them. The study of animals will be culminated by our exciting field trip to the Phoenix Zoo in March.  What an exciting year it will be!

We would like to thank all of the parents for their outstanding support.  We encourage you to stay involved in your children’s education.  We sure have an active and enthusiastic group of learners!
