Kindergarten is the first and most important year
of school for many children. It is a time of personal adjustment
and stepping out beyond the family into the world beyond. The kindergarten
teachers at Entz are excited about helping your child handle this
adventure successfully.
The
kindergarten program provides many opportunities for children
to learn literacy skills while sharing what they know with
their classmates. In our classrooms,
children are exposed to many songs,
poems, stories, and games, as they learn reading and math skills. In
reading, we are working on learning upper and lower case letters. We are learning
letter names, their sounds and how to write them correctly. We will learn how
to blend these sounds with short vowels to make words. The children will learn
twenty-three sight words from the district reading program. Our goal is to
have students move to first grade already seeing themselves as readers and
writers.
In math, we use a multitude of manipulatives to assist in learning basic skills
and concepts. We begin with free explorations, and then move into sorting and
patterning. By the end of the year, we will be using the manipulatives to show
our understanding of numbers and number families.
Children will count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. Students will
be able to correctly form numerals 0-20. We will also learn about graphs, coins, clocks
and measurement. Our calendar lessons help us to learn many math concepts throughout
the year.
Before the school year begins, each student needs a personal back pack and possibly a lunch box. Please make sure the backpack is large enough for folders and large books to fit into.
We would appreciate it if every parent would have supplies at home so that the students will be able to complete their homework. Pencils, crayons, scissors and glue are required throughout the year.
Mesa Public Schools provides all materials and supplies that your child will need during the school day. If you wish to contribute glue sticks, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, etc. at any time during the year, it would be greatly appreciated.
Kindergarten at Entz is exciting! Teaching children to become successful
involves cooperation between the school and home. We look forward to a wonderful
year together.
Please remember to READ with your child every night!
