Welcome to Third Grade!
Our team is very excited to provide your children with a reading, language, math, science, and social studies program that will support the Arizona State Standards, and enrich their love for learning through engaging activities. We have worked closely together as a team to develop units that will not only allow your child to acquire and master many skills but also, apply them at a higher cognitive level while completing intergrated tasks.
Our math program is a mixture of the Opening Eyes Program and the District's brand new math series. The children will strengthen their skills in math facts, addition and subtraction computation, and variety of problem-solving skills. Along with this they will learn new concepts in time, money, graphing, geometry, fractions, and multiplication. The use of manipulatives and practical applications is highly motivating for all ability levels.
The thematic units we have developed have a variety of reading, language arts, and math experiences in them. Each unit is exciting and makes learning fun. The children will be reading chapter books and stories out the basal reader that coincide with our thematic units .Their reading will include historical fiction and non-fiction books. During our thematic units the children will be writing reports, legends, poetry, narratives, and letters. Our relatively new English series will help to strengthen the children's grammar skills as we do our many writing experiences.
Your support is vital to our program. If you put a value on education at home it really shows in your child's efforts at school. We have a STAR reading program that is designed to encourage your child's love for reading. Your child should be reading books that are at or above his/her reading level we've provided in student homework folders. Please help your child record their books, pages, and points, and then initial how they were read. At the end of the quarter add up their points so they can turn them in for a grade and a prize. Some other areas they will need your guidance on are homework, studying their facts, and practicing their cursive.
Snacks, snacks, snacks, and more snacks. Our children have a late lunch, so by 10:00 a.m. they are very hungry. It would really help if everyone could send a snack in like crackers, cookies, pretzels, or fruit chews throughout the year. Our classes are running out of the snacks brought at the beginning of the year, so please help if you can.
We would like to say thank you to all of our parent volunteers who have helped in our classes at school and from home! Since we do thematic units we are always looking for people who can share what they know about our units. The units we teach are Early Mesa ...Hohokams, Colonial Times, China, Birds, and the Rain Forest. If you know of anyone who would be willing to be our special guest and share what they know we would truly appreciate it.
Entz third grade teachers (Ms. Wade, Mrs.Ryland, Mrs.Young, and Mrs. Cerqua) are really cramming in the knowledge what with their Hohokam unit, times tables, problem solving, and creative stories. This spring our bright 3rd graders will be working vigorously on our China unit as well as an exciting bird unit, and an amazing Rain Forest unit. Please talk with your child daily to find out what they are learning and if they are keeping up. Your interest validates their learning and helps them to make a self-check on their progress.
This has been a terrific year. Your children are very special to us and loved. Thank you for sharing your children with all of us here in third grade!
