Frequently Asked Questions: ELL Placement
1.
Are all students who have a primary home language other than English (PHLOTE)
Identified as English Language Learners (ELLs)?
No. Only those students who are tested with the AZELLA and score below the
publisher's designated score for "proficient" may be classified
as ELLs.
2.
How do I know if a student in my class is an ELL?
If a student has been administered the AZELLA, a code will appear in the bilingual
(BIL) field of the Genesis screen. You may also check the student's cumulative
file for a Student Language Assessment and Program Record card.
3.
When does an ELL student exit the SEI program?
The ELL student must score at the Proficient level on the AZELLA to
meet criteria for exit from the SEI program. (See AZELLA Exit Criteria Chart)
NOTE: The ELL student can be withdrawn from the SEI program by parent request. The parent must complete a form called Parent Request for Student Withdrawal from an English Language Learner Program.
