COUNSELING PROGRAM (CCBG)
The EVA Guidance and Counseling program operates under the Comprehensive Competency - Based Guidance format (CCBG). Simply put, the school counselor has a curriculum that she will deliver during the course of the year to the students at EVA. This curriculum is delivered through a variety of methods that may include one-on-one conferences, small group activities, and/or large group presentations. The premise of CCBG, that certain information related to guidance and counseling needs to be presented to all students during their high school years, has been accepted by MPS, the Arizona School Counselors Association, and the American School Counselor Association.
APPOINTMENTS
Parents or students can make counseling appointments by contacting EVA's Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Peters, in person or by phone (480) 472-4951. Students may be excused from class for short periods to meet with the counselor.
HOURS OF OPERATION
EVA's counselor is on campus from 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. on a daily basis during the regular school year. Although walk-ins are taken, an appointment is the best way to insure that the counselor will be available to meet with a student and/or parent.
CAREER CORNER
Although EVA does not have a CAREER CENTER like the other traditional Mesa high Schools, we do have similar resources and services in the Media Center at EVA. The five work station areas found in the Media Center are:
Career Exploration - exploration of career pathways may be done on our computer software program called CHOICES (found on each Media Center computer. Books, magazines, and videos are also available for student use in this workstation.
Post-Secondary Options - the Career Corner contains information on 4-year colleges, 2-year colleges, vocational/technical schools, on-the-job training, internships, apprenticeships, the military, and entrance procedures and tests.
Financing Your Future - the Career Corner contains information on financial aid and scholarships. The SUCCESS BULLETIN, a major component of this workstation, is published each month and lists many scholarship opportunities available to EVA students. The Bulletin is available on line at www.mpsaz.org/eva.
Resume - each year students develop a resume and save it to disk. Students may come in and update their resume and/or run a copy at any time.
Individual Portfolio - the counselor keeps a portfolio in the office for each student. This Portfolio is started in the 9th grade an contains each student's resume, transcript, aptitude and interest test results, tentative career plans, and other valuable information collected by the student during their high school days. The Portfolio is available to the student throughout the school year and is given to them during their senior year. |
JOB PLACEMENT
Mesa Youth Placement provides information on jobs available for high school students. Students must register with M.Y.P. Before they can use this service. EVA's media specialist, Mrs. Laufer, coordinates this District program.
PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES
EVA has the service of a school psychologist on a weekly basis. The primary purpose is to assist students with moderate to serious learning problems. This might include reading, math, or written language difficulties. A request for psychological services may be made through our principal or counselor.
