Healthy Celebrations at Guerrero Elementary

Guerrero is a Healthy Birthday Celebrations School. This means we find ways to celebrate the day without cookies, cakes and cupcakes. 

bananasBirthday celebrations and family events are great opportunities to promote a healthy lifestyle, provide consistent  messages and create excitement around nutritious choices at school. In 2018, Guerrero Parents on the School Improvement Advisory Council (SIAC) voted to hold events that emphasize healthy foods and to shift the focus to planning non-food events or acknowledgements.


For example the birthday student can:

  • Be the teacher's "special helper" for the day.
  • Wear a special crown, sash, button, badge, cape or t-shirt.
  • Choose a game or activity the class gets to do at the end of the day in place of a food celebration.

Treats Are Still Welcome

Make good nutrition the expectation and the easy choice — offer fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat/fat-free dairy products and water. We also ask that you avoid sending snacks that may contain peanuts, peanut butter, and other common allergens.

In addition, all food items brought to school must be store bought and in the original store packaging. In essence, no home-baked goods are allowed for class snacks. Your students may continue to bring what they choose for their school lunch and individual snacks.

A healthy snack is one that is low in fat, sugar and/or sodium and less than 200 calories per portion.

  • Animal Crackers
  • Raisins in individual boxes
  • Multigrain Bars
  • Goldfish Pretzels
  • Cheez I Crackers
  • Applesauce Cups
  • Cereal Bars
  • Chex Mix
