I am Mandy Heal. I am excited to teach your student about the world around them! I currently am the science content teacher for 6th grade. I believe that you are your student's best and most consistent teacher. You are the one that has been with them through the years. It is my privilege to help you mold them into young people who will value others and the world around them.
I have 3 children. All of my children attend Hale Elementary (4th Grade, 1st grade, and Kindergarten). We love to attend community events, museums, go hiking, and watching movies together. I also love to read and create digital scrapbooks in my “spare” time.
I graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Elementary Education. I minored in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Art education. While at BYU, I had the opportunity to study abroad in both Jerusalem and Europe. I also lived in Spain for a year and a half and learned Spanish. A true immersion experience! My husband speaks Spanish and we are trying to teach our kids through the one parent one language technique. I was a tour guide in Guatemala for two summers focusing on archaeology and ecotourism.
I received my Master's degree from University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction June 2006. The summer of 2006, I enrolled in the “Highly Qualified Science” co-hort at ASU. Our classes emphasized field experiences and the environment.
I wrote the new fifth grade science curriculum for Mesa with an eye toward including ESL students when all of the standards changed in Arizona. I also was recognized as the CARSEF Science Teacher of the Year in 2007. In 2014, I was chosen to attend a NASA field trip where we visited Mars Analog sites and learned from the top project scientists. It was amazing!
I taught fifth grade in a Title 1 school for six years as the designated ESL classroom at Roosevelt Elementary in Mesa. One year, I only had six native English speakers in my classroom. In addition, I taught 4th, 5th, and 6th graders as the science specialist at charter schools for two years. I taught 6th grade at Hale as the science specialist for one year before staying home with my children.
I returned to Hale as a fifth grade teacher in 2014. In 2015, I moved up with my class to be the science content specialist for 6th grade. I love science and am so excited to teach my students about the world around them!
