Has your child come home talking about "blue books" and "AR levels?"
Have you wondered what they meant?
Well. Here's the scoop.Accelerated Reader is a reading practice program that has been implemented in all our classrooms. Children read books in a "reading range" which has been determined, by a diagnostic test, to be in their reading comfort zone. Although these reading ranges are expressed numerically, they do not represent grade levels. This Zone of Proximal Development, or Z.P.D., enables each child to choose books within her or his range for good practice and sincere enjoyment. As your child reads more books, the reading range will increase.
When your child finishes a book, a short comprehension quiz is taken using a computer. A certain number of points are earned based on the score as well as the length and difficulty of the material. The Accelerated Reader computer software will produce a report for your child to bring home. This T.O.P.S. Report will outline the results of each quiz, and will also include the number of points earned, average book level, and average score of all quizzes taken year to date. Check this report each time it comes home. Ask your child what goal he or she has set. As students improve their reading skills, confidence and success in all areas increases as well.
Your child and your child's teacher would be a great source for additional information about Accelerated Reading within the classroom and the Media Center.
The following list shows you all the books for which the Hawthorne Library owns AR quizzes in reading level order. The color code you see here is the same code our students use to locate books in their range. All AR books are color-coded to help students find the ones that are best for them. Please use this list as a reference for your trips to the Mesa Public Library or to a bookstore for gift giving. Please be aware that several of the reading range lists are extremely large, so we suggest you do not try and print a copy.
We hope this list will help you as you support your child's AR Reading experience and success.
