Welcome!
My name is Mrs. Julie Straughn, and I have been a Mesa Public Schools teacher since 1979. I have thirty years of elementary and junior high teaching experience - kindergarten through eighth grade. This is my tenth year at Hendrix. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University in 1978 and a Master's Degree in Education in 1991. I hold a Provisional Gifted Education Endorsement (K-12) and a Structured English Immersion Endorsement.
I am currently Hendrix's Title I School Improvement Specialist. I am considered a communication link for curriculum and instruction issues between District Curriculum and Instruction, other departments and Hendrix Junior High School. I assist, support, and coach staff members in effective instruction with emphasis in the curriculum areas of reading, writing, and mathematics to ensure student success and academic achievement. I promote school improvement by facilitating training, providing professional development (district and principal driven), working with achievement data (AIMS and Acuity-Predictive Testing Program), and ensuring the implementation of state standards, district curriculum, and our site's school improvement plan including all NCLB compliance regulations.
On most days, you'll usually find me in a classroom modeling, observing, or assisting teachers and/or students. It's such a great feeling when a prescriptive strategy has worked for a teacher or struggling student. I am passionate about creating a solid professional working community at Hendrix in hopes that we will once again become an excelling school.
Being an effective educator has been one of my life-long goals, and I continue to stay current with researched-based and best teaching practices. I am proud to say that I have been recognized by the MPS superintendency, CAMLA, and the Hendrix administration and staff for my educational contributions and achievements.
It is my hope that Hendrix teachers and students will see me as an agent of change--- positive change. I am proud to be a Hendrix Husky!
