Band at Highland Arts Elementary
Band is open to all students in the 5th and 6th grade. Band meets two times each week for 30 minutes, plus possible special rehearsals before
school. 5th grade, the Storm Band, performs at least three concerts during the school year. 6th grade band, our Hurricane Band, performs five or six times, including performing at Mountain View High School and in band competition.
Storm (5th grade) Band is for students new to band. You learn the basics from how to put the instrument together and make sounds, to making music as a band. Hurricane (6th grade) Band is for students with experience. Sixth grade band students are expected to play the instrument they played in 5th grade. Highland does have a beginning 6th grade band where 6th grade students new to band can learn to play a band instrument. These students are promoted to the Hurricane Band as soon as their abilities allow.
Band is a class. It does involve regular home practice (homework) and work in class, so every one is involved in producing music. Band instruments include: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet*, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone*, trumpet/cornet, French horn*, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, and percussion.
Most students secure their own instrument. The school does have a limited number of school owned instruments*. These instruments are available for student use. There are local music stores with excellent rental and purchase plans.
Music students do score higher on national tests. You can take band and be involved in other activities. Students from Highland’s band have gone on to accomplish great things. Former Highland band students now are professional musicians. One plays in the NFL. Others have gone one to be successful in teaching, and business. But they all played in Highland’s band.
Band is a year long class. Any student who takes band is expected to be in band for the entire year. Performances validate what we learn in class. Attendance at evening performances is expected. Concerts date calendars will be sent out at the beginning of the year.
