A+ School of Excellence

Ishikawa Elementary School, 2635 N. 32nd St., was one of 20 schools statewide,  to receive the 2009-10 annual "A+ Schools of Excellence."

Principal Shelley Heath discussed the extensive evaluation process.

On Ishikawa's successful formula:

The teamwork of our entire learning community.

On Ishikawa adapting to the times:

A strong emphasis on the individual student, and what areas of specific skill, and detailed areas of challenge that need to be implemented into daily instruction and lesson design.

On the key to student improvement:

There is constant and strong communication within each teaching team about Studentsactive student learning and a focus on individual student learning needs. This is then coupled with strong and supportive parent involvement.

On the biggest educational misconception:

That elementary teachers only work 40 hours a week and nine months a year.
