Fifth Grade

Program Overview

Fifth grade is a year of emotional, physical, social, and academic changes. Our roles as teachers and parents are vital in achieving a successful and positive school year, in which students learn to take more and more responsibility for their behavior and education.

The daily assignment calendar and your child's binder are important tools in achieving organization and responsiblilty. Please encourage study skills, homework completion, neatness, and organization by reviewing these materials with your child regularly. You can expect an average of 30 minutes homework daily(Mon. - Thurs.).

"Guide to the Galaxy"

Curriculum

In social studies, Ishikawa fifth graders have been studying the American Revolution and the birth of our nation. We will continue to learn about our American history through the early years of our nation, including the creation of our constitution. During the second semester, students will begin working on their state reports. This is a great combination of studying our states' history, learning states and capitals, and learning how to research and put together a major report.

Fifth grade science units include: "Mystery Powders", "What's the Matter?", "May the Forces Be with You", "Bones, Muscles, Brains", "Guide to the Galaxy", and"How to Fly a Simulator".

In science thus far, our fifth graders have been studying the systems of the human body, including the nervous system, the muscular system, the skeletal system, and the circulatory system. Later this year, students will begin the unit, "Guide to the Galaxy". With this unit, they will also participate in a unit of studies that will allow them to learn about the priciples of flight. This unit will culminate with a field trip to the Salk Flight Center, in which the students will sit in and operate a flight simulator, which is a miniature plane with hydrolics.

Reading, writing, and spelling are emphasized in communication skills. Literature is incorporated into our classroom reading programs. The AR reading program also makes up a significant component of the fifth grade curriculum in this area . AR encourages students to become "frequent fliers"in their independent reading habits, as well as fostering a love of reading as they do this. Vocabulary development, reading process and comprehension skills, grammar, and writing mechanics are practiced daily. Students participate in creative writing projects in a variety of formats, while focusing on the essential traits of writing.
