Kindergarten

 

  Our kindergarten offerings consist of "Full Day" and "Young Learner" options:

  • Full Day Kindergarten (4 sessions)
  • Young Learner Kindergarten (1 session))

 

 

Full Day Kindergarten

Our full day kindergarten classes follow the Mesa Public Schools curriculum, which is aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards.

 

Reading:

The goal of MPS is for every child to be a successful and independent reader. Skills taught in kindergarten include:

  • Concepts of Print
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonetic Skills
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension-Literary Text (fiction)
  • Comprehension-Informational Text (nonfiction)

 

Writing:

Writing Elements: Through daily writing activities, students will develop the elements or traits of beginning writing.

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Voice
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Conventions- write the 26 letters of the alphabet; use a capital letter to begin important words; attempt end punctuation; use knowledge of letters and sounds to spell simple words with some consonants and a few vowels.

Writing Applications:  Through a variety of writing applications, students will begin developing their written communication skills. These include:

  • Write a narrative or story by drawing, dictating, or writing.
  • Create list, observations, or journals.

 

 

Math:

In math, kindergarten students will learn:

  • count, read, and write numbers to 20
  • count forward to 20 and backwards from 10
  • model, order, and compare numbers to 20
  • determine ordinal positions first through fifth 
  • identify all number combinations and manipulative sets of numbers 0-10
  • use objects to explore concepts of addition and subtraction
  • model addition and subtraction facts to 10 using objects
  • add and subtract models of halves
  • identify penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar
  • identify the symbols:+,-,=
  • data analysis, graphing, and discrete mathematics
  • patterns and algebraic thinking
  • geometry and measurement
  • problem solving

Young Learner Kindergarten

YLK is for children that turn five between September 1 and December 31. In YLK we follow the same academic standards as our regular kindergarten. However, material is presented differently and at a more basic level. We also focus on social skills which are so important in kindergarten and in first grade.
