Fourth Grade is an exciting and challenging school year as students transition from the primary
to the intermediate grades. Standards are raised, greater responsibilities are shouldered, time
management is emphasized, and organizational skills become vital to successful completion of major projects.
All instruction is dictated by District and Arizona State Standards.
Curriculum Highlights
Reading
Students are introduced to several genres of literature, higher level thinking skills, vocabulary instruction,
comprehension instruction, reading aloud, and listening and speaking skills. We encourage at home independent
reading of text selections prior to testing on on Fridays. AR (Accelerated Reading) is a school-wide program
designed to motivate independent reading and comprehension through computer generated tests. We utilize this
program in addition to regular classroom instruction.
Math
The math focus is on the following topics:
- Place Value
- Adding & Subtracting Whole Numbers and Money
- Multiplication & Division Facts
- Data and Probability
- Multiplying by 1-Digit & 2-Digit Numbers
- Time & Measurement
- Fractions
- Geometry
Top Gun is a program used to motivate mastering of the basic facts. Fourth graders must pass a predetermined
number of addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts to become a member of the "Math Facts Club." From
there, it is on to the "Top Gun" Challenge.
This program officially begins in January.

Social Studies & Science
There are several units taught throughout the year. Our students will especially enjoy
the hands on activities. The Arizona unit will involve a research project.
Parents will want to keep watch for information detailing requirements and deadlines this spring.
This project will apply the writing skills we have learned from within the
other areas of the curriculum.
Homework Policy
Homework is given for the purpose of developing responsibility in students and providing
opportunities to practice skills. Parents can see what is being taught on a nightly basis.
In addition to specific assignments, students should be spending time on AR reading,
practicing Math Facts, Spelling and Vocabulary Words.
Contact your child's teacher if more than 40-50 minutes are being spent on nightly assignments.
Extras
Our Field Trip destination has yet to be determined.
In May we have planned the culmination to our study of Arizona. Day activities as well as an evening
program will celebrate the Grand Canyon State through music, dance, storytelling, art, and student presentations.
