Fifth Grade is an exciting year at Johnson!
In addition to the basics of reading, writing, and math, students study
a wide variety of topics in the areas of social studies and science.
There is a strong emphasis on study skills in fifth grade, which
helps our students to develop habits which will provide a solid
foundation for success in school and later in the working world.
Consistent use of student planners helps our students stay organized.
Reading
Johnson fifth graders are wonderful readers! The fifth grade teachers
utilize many resources in developing the students' reading skills.
The district adopted text, Harcourt Brace Treasury of Literature,
is used in conjunction with newspapers, reference books, literature
studies, and skill activities to enhance student learning. Students
continue to experience success and enjoyment through participation
in the Accelerated Reader Program.
Math
Math instruction at Johnson emphasizes the basics: Math Facts, Operations (+-x÷),
Place Value, Problem Solving, Fractions, Geometry, and Measurement.
Students diligently work to become members of the Math Facts Club.
Your child may have a different teacher for math. Students learn and perform better
when teachers consider individual students' strengths when planning instruction.
Students are placed in math classes based on scores from the District Math Test
and a Math Inventory given in May.
Written Communications
Writing is an essential skill in the working world. Fifth Graders
perform a variety of writing tasks. Letter writing, journals, narratives,
poetry, and report writing are all important components of the
writing curriculum in fifth grade.
Science
The core science units studied in fifth grade are: Chemistry, Health,
Environment and Me; Human Body Systems; Solar Energy; and Flight
and Space. All classes participate in "Space Week," which includes
guest speakers and a trip to the Lowell Flight Center. A visit to
the Halle Heart Center is planned for November.
Social Studies
Fifth graders study American History, with an emphasis on the following
topics: Native Americans, European Exploration, Colonization, and
The American Revolution. The social studies curriculum also includes
U.S. Geography, states, and capitals.
