Extended Learning Program

All About Us...
Here's to the kids who are different,
the kids who don't always get "A's";
the kids who have ears
twice the size of their peers,
or noses that go on for days.
Here's to the kids who are different,
the kids who are just out of step;
the kids they all tease,
who have cuts on their knees
and whose sneakers are constantly wet.
Here's to the kids who are different,
the kids with a mischievous streak;
for when they have grown
as history has shown,
it's their difference that makes them unique.

Philosophy
& Goals:
Philosophy
If we desire to educate each child to his or her fullest potential, then
we must provide programs which will challenge our most
capable students. Mesa Unified School District's Extended
Learning Program is committed to serving the special needs
of intellectually gifted students with educational
opportunities that are qualitatively different. This program
is based on the belief that the special needs of these
students require a curriculum which emphasizes critical
thinking and creative problem solving.
Goals
The Mesa Unified School District seeks to identity and serve all
qualified students through the Extended Learning Program.
The goals are to:
realize
and extend intellectual and creative abilities with an
emphasis on self-direction
develop
thinking processes using advanced problem-solving skills
and inquiry techniques
provide
opportunities to discuss and exchange ideas with
intellectual peers
encourage
students to use their abilities in areas of varied
interest
develop
interpersonal and leadership skills
encourage
the development of a positive self-image
prepare
for and adapt to an ever-changing society
gain an
understanding of how their abilities and needs are
different
Use their
abilities for the good of society
