Our kindergarten offerings consist of full day,
and young learner options with satellite and half day options available in the district.
Young Learner Kindergaten students are on a continuing developmental curriculum socially, emotionally and
academically. They are experiencing the creative curriculum through
manipulatives, songs and play.
Kindergarten at Johnson is a fun
educational experience. Children will be exposed to many songs,
poems, stories and games as they learn reading and math skills. They
will learn the upper case letters, lower case letters and phonemic
sounds. This year, they will also learn to blend short vowel words
and learn some sight words as well. It is our goal that most students
will move on to first grade already seeing themselves as readers an
writers.
In math, the children will have great
fun learning concepts with a multitude of manipulatives. They will
begin with free explorations, then move into sorting and patterning.
By the end of the year, students will be using the manipulatives to
truly understand numbers. For example, they will understand that 7
can be 3 and 4, or 5 and 2, or 6 and 1, etc. They will learn to write
and read numbers, count to 100 by 1's, 10's, and 5's. They will have
knowledge of graphing and calendars.
Children in the Johnson Kindergarten will have many opportunities to explore the world of science.
They will make many predictions and test them out. They will explore
magnets, colors, the properties of sink and float, the weather, etc.
We will learn about farm animals, zoo animals, pets, sea animals and insects.
Birthdays:
Your child's birthday is a very special occasion. We will be celebrating his/her birthday at
school. You may send in birthday treats on this day if you wouldlike. If so, please plan
to send in enough for 25 children (reg. K classrooms) and 22 children (EK).
Homemade food items are not allowed at school. Please take into consideration
when choosing something to send. If your child's birthday is during the summer, we will
celebrate his/her birthday the last few weeks of school.
Show and Tell:
Show and Tell is on Fridays.
Home Work Folders:
Homework should be done nightly if possible. The activities
should only take 5 to 15 minutes to complete.
