Welcome to 2nd Grade!

I have been teaching 2nd grade for lots of years and love it! My teaching career began in Orem, Utah teaching third grade.  After I was married I moved to New Mexico and there began my second grade teaching experience. After teaching two years my husband and I moved to Mesa, Arizona.  For a few years I stayed home and raised children.  When they were all in school I came back to teaching.  I have taught second grade at Johnson for 16 years.

It is important to me that the chldren love coming to school. I want second grade to be a memory for each child.  It is so important  for the children to feel confident in reading and math.  They are building a foundation that will help them through their school experience.  The parent - teacher communication is vital to the children's success.  Parents are welcomed into my classroom any time, any day!  They can listen to children read, practice math facts, help with art activities or cooking projects.

Children learn best through hands-on activities. Learning should be exciting and fun.   I try to relate Social Studies and Science to stories we read in our reading series.  Baking cakes and Thanksgiving pies we learn about measurement.  When we read Dear Mr. Blueberry (a story about a whale) we create whale projects.  Building lemonade stands helps the children relate to the story "Making Lemonade."   The story of Johnny Appleseed helps us explore the western frontier which is part of our Social Studies curriculum.

Music enhances learning.  Children love to sing.  They can practice fluency in reading, rhyming and syllabication skills while reading and learning words to songs.  We have fun practicing and performing a second grade musical.  We work together with parents and community as they help us design scenery, costumes and sometimes even teach dances!

I grew up in Mexico City so it is important to me for the children to gain knowledge about the world around them.  We have stories with settings in Mexico, China and other countries.  This gives us the opportunity to learn more about those countries, learn their culture and taste their food.  Learning is fun!

I'm looking forward to all the fun learning experiences we'll have together.
