| This
handbook has been prepared for you and your childs benefit to ensure that
your child has a successful year in sixth grade. Please read and review the
contents carefully and put it in a safe place for future reference. Study Skills Study skills are an essential part of your childs success in school. Students need to stay organized and manage their time in class wisely. The class will be doing group activites as well as independent activities. Students are given an agenda to write down daily assignments. Agendas should be monitored by parents nightly because I do require a parent signature in them. Students will always be given time in class to start an activity. I do this so that I can make sure they understand what they are expected to do. If they are unsure of what they need to do they can ask me before they go home. If your child does not understand the work they need to come and see me before school. Student Management In order to create an atmosphere for learning, we will be using a classroom management plan that promotes positive choices. The students are taught to monitor their own behavior and choices. We have a class motto that all students are expected to follow: We will present ourselves as leaders of our school by being truthful, respecting others and always doing our personal best in the way we act and in the way we learn. If students are struggling with making positive choices and are not following the class motto they will first conference with the teacher and if need be; parents as well. Monday Message/Classroom Newsletter Students will receive a Monday Message each week. This folder will contain all work from the previous week, a progress report every other week , and a classroom newsletter. Please review the report and newsletter carefully as they give you valuable information about student progress and classroom/school activities. On the progress report parents will see their childs current grades along with any missing assignment they may have. Any paper with a score below 70% may be corrected and resubmitted within a timely manner. Parents should sign the report on the left side and remove all the papers from the right pocket. The folders and report are expected to be returned to school by Wednesday. It is important to expect this folder weekly unless otherwise notified. D.A.R.E. The D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a 12 week program sponsored by the Chandler Police Department. Students are instructed weekly by a trained D.A.R.E. officer. To complete the program and graduate, students must do two things. First, they must complete their D.A.R.E. workbook. They must also write a D.A.R.E. essay explaining what they enjoyed about the program, what they learned, and how they will remain drug and violence free. A graduation ceremony will take place at the completion of the program. Dress Code A copy of the school handbook is in your childs agenda. Please review the section on dress code carefully. Students will be sent to the health office for a dress code T-shirt if they fail to follow the dress code. Please remember that the dress code is in effect at all school functions both on and off campus. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sixth grade is an exciting year for students. With it comes many changes both emotionally and physically. Students need to become more responsible for their own actions and decisions. As educators and parents, we must work together to achieve this goal. I look forward to working with your child. The year is abundant with fun and educational activities. Its going to be an awesome year for all! Questions or concerns, please contact me at 472-3815. |
