I was born and raised in Chicago and then moved to Portland, Oregon with my family when I was 13 years old. I was the oldest of 4 children.
I received a Bachelor of Science in Communications Management, with a Minor in Spanish from the University of Portland. With this degree, I worked in restaurant management, was an interpreter for a phone company, and ran my own daycare center.
In 1999, my husband and I moved to Arizona with our family. I went back to school nights and weekends, while working for a local school district. In 2002, I received my Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Elementary Education. I have since received endorsements in Early Childhood Special Education and Structured English Immersion. I have been teaching for 8 years now, 7 of which have been for Mesa Public Schools. I really enjoy working with young children. I am one of the few special education preschool teachers who are bilingual in Spanish and English. This helps me to better communicate with the students and their families.
In 2009, my husband and I adopted 3 children, two of whom were natural siblings. We had been fostering them for a few years, while their cases worked themselves through the court system. We now have 5 children who range in age from almost 4-18 years of age. The adopted children also have some special needs. I have found that ideas from work help me with my family and ideas from home help me with the children and families that I work with.
