What is a counselor?

A counselor is a person who is:

  • Certificated and specially trained
  • A resource -  coordinator - consultant - mediator
  • An advocate between teacher, student, parent, school, and other agencies.

What does a counselor do?

  • Teach career, guidance, and prevention classes
  • Individual student counseling
  • Coordinate programs like intervention, mentoring, AVID, IB, and leadership
  • Coordinate school wide events, guest speakers, and assemblies
  • Liaison for parent/teacher/student conferences
  • Conferences with the parent about concerns with their child
  • Help teachers with ideas for student success in school
  • Assist in registration and course selections
  • Conflict resolution and mediation
  • Identify resources for support
  • Group counseling
  • Help students with academic planning for high school and beyond

  • Appointments made by the counselor
  • Self-referral- you can come in and ask to see your counselor
  • Parent referral
  • Administrative referral
  • Group participant
  • Classroom presentation
